LACK OF FAMILY VALUES IS THE PROBLEM
I WOULD like to register my opposition to the proposed legislation to limit handgun purchases to one per month. I have no personal problem with that limitation, but it is not possible to compromise with the anti-gun people who do not want compromise. They want complete capitulation. The Roanoke Times & World-News, for example, recently stated in an editorial that the Brady bill might be passed with the Clinton administration. Then added "this will be a start."
The problems that Gov. Wilder is trying to solve with this legislation are complex. They go back to family values, and he has never proposed any legislation to address this. A recent television documentary on the causes of crime in the country confirmed the basic cause to be the lack of family values. One more law heaped upon hundreds of others to control guns is not the answer.
It never ceases to amaze me how people with an obvious degree of intellect, such as editors and governors, can concoct such simple solutions to such complex problems, and then heap abuse on the general population for failing to agree with them.
Nobody has yet addressed the additional cost of administering the one-handgun legislation. Why should Virginia taxpayers pay for legislation of no benefit to us, and which will have no real effect on the problems of Washington and New York?
Incidently, I conducted a survey of Virginia citizens and 100 percent were opposed to more gun control! WILLIAM H. MASHBURN Virginia Tech BLACKSBURG
