DEMATHA COACH GETS 1,000TH WIN
DeMatha High School coach Morgan Wootten became only the fifth high school basketball coach to win 1,000 games, guiding the Stags to an 85-50 boys' victory over Ireton on Friday night. All of the victories have come at DeMatha, a private school in Hyattsville, Md., where Wootten, 61, has coached for 37 years.
The Stags are 10-6 this season, something of an off-year for Wootten, who has made DeMatha a traditional powerhouse in the Washington metropolitan area.
Wootten has sent 12 players to the NBA, including former all-star Adrian Dantley and current Cleveland Cavalier Danny Ferry. There are 20 former DeMatha players and assistants coaching at the college level.
One of Wootten's biggest victories came in 1965 when DeMatha handed Lew Alcindor's New York Power Memorial its only loss during Alcindor's school career. Alcindor later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
