FATHER WHO LEFT SON IN BLAZE PLEADS GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER

A father who saved himself while his 2-year-old son died in an October trailer fire has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse.

Everette F. Bishop Jr., 23, will be sentenced Feb. 24. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $100,000.

Circuit Judge William Person placed Bishop under close supervision Thursday while a pre-sentence report is prepared.

Bishop's son, Christopher L. Bishop, died from smoke inhalation after a fire began inside the trailer. Bishop was asleep when the fire broke out, but was awakened by smoke and flames. He climbed out of the trailer through a bathroom window.

The boy's body was found in his bedroom along with the family's dog. Bishop's wife was not at home at the time of the fire.

Commonwealth's Attorney George Fairbanks said Bishop admitted to police that he consumed most of a bottle of vodka and smoked a marijuana cigarette on the day of the fire.
