DREADED ASIAN MOSQUITO FOUND TO BE SPREADING ACROSS STATE

Entomologists say an Asian mosquito described as sneaky, aggressive and hardy is spreading across Virginia.

"It's nothing to panic about, but it can be particularly troublesome," said Eric Day, who manages the state insect identification lab at Virginia Tech and keeps track of the Asian tiger mosquito's whereabouts in Virginia.

The mosquito, known as Aedes Albopictus, is black with bright white bands around its hind legs, Day said. In Virginia, the insects were first discovered June 1991 in Virginia Beach. Since then, the bugs have shown up in Norfolk, Nottoway County, Chesterfield County and Richmond.

The Asian tiger mosquito is known to transmit at least 26 diseases - about twice the number as most mosquitoes. But the mosquito has not transmitted any diseases in the United States so far, said Chet Moore, an entomologist at the Centers for Disease Control's insect laboratory in Fort Collins, Colo. - Associated Press
