PANTHERS SURPRISE CAPTAINS
Ferrum freshman Clance Noble tipped in a missed shot with three seconds left to give the Panthers a 67-66 victory over nationally ranked Christopher Newport in a Dixie Conference men's basketball game Friday night at Newport News.Ferrum (11-4 overall, 2-0 conference) has beaten two ranked teams in two weeks. The Panthers stopped No. 8 Emory & Henry on Jan. 11.
Walter Webb led the Panthers with 20 points. Noble finished with five points.
The Captains (13-3, 2-1), ranked ninth in Division III, got 20 points from Steve Artis.
After Noble's tip-in, the Captains tried a length-of-the-court pass, but Noble stole the ball as time expired.
In other state games:
\ Bridgewater 62, Washington and Lee 60: At Lexington, Jeff Berry hit two free throws with 38 seconds left to lead the Eagles over the Generals in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. Cam Dyer missed a jumper with three seconds left for W&L (4-11, 2-8). Bridgewater (8-8, 6-5) shot 77 percent in the second half. Jeff Berry led Bridgewater with 15 points. Derek Carter had 18 points for W&L.
\ Averett 65, Newport News 61: At Newport News, Chad Ford put Averett ahead to stay on a 3-pointer with 4:29 left and the Cougars went on to hand the Builders their 14th consecutive loss. Averett (3-11) got 24 points from Corey Blackwell and 23 from Ford. Andre Harrison led Newport News (2-16) with 18 points and Tegerio McCrae added 11.

\ Christopher Newport 81, Ferrum 79: At Newport News, Liisa Barnes scored three baskets, including the go-ahead basket, in the final three minutes as the Captains came from 10 points down to register the Dixie Conference victory over the Panthers. Ferrum had a shot to tie with four seconds left but was off target. Karen Barefoot scored 30 points to lead the Lady Captains (10-7, 1-2). Sarah Quesenberry scored 21 for Ferrum (5-9, 1-2).
\ Randolph-Macon 51, Hollins 42: At Ashland, Jen Kohler scored 16 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (9-6, 7-2) to the ODAC victory over Hollins. Hollins (6-6, 2-5) was led by Serena Beedie's 19 points.\
