53 PERCENT IN POLL OPPOSE LIFT OF GAY BAN
Although 72 percent of Americans answering a poll released Saturday think homosexuals can serve effectively in the armed forces, 53 percent believe President Clinton shouldn't lift a ban on gays in the military. The poll of 663 people is reported on in Newsweek's Feb. 1 issue, which hits newsstands Monday. It was conducted by the Gallup Organization on Thursday and Friday, and had a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
According to the poll, 72 percent of Americans think that gays could serve effectively in the military if they keep their sexual orientation private, but more than half still think the military's ban on gays should remain.
