GUN-CONTROL RALLIES PLANNED BY BOTH SIDES
Gun-control advocates and opponents will stage a verbal shootout this week with back-to-back rallies in Capitol Square.Supporters of stricter gun controls will gather for an anti-violence rally at 10:30 a.m. Monday while backers of the National Rifle Association are expected to descend on the capitol en masse Tuesday. Their rally will also be at 10:30 a.m.
The Monday event, sponsored by the Richmond Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Partners for a Healthy Community, will feature an assortment of speakers and a possible appearance by Gov. Douglas Wilder.
"We're hoping," said Linda Moss, staff assistant for the Richmond chamber, noting that Wilder has made no commitment. The governor has made a one-per-month limit on handgun purchases the centerpiece of a package of anti-crime bills being pushed by his administration.
Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association is urging its 80,000 state members to travel to Richmond Tuesday for a day of lobbying. "The idea is just to get folks from across the state to make their views known," said spokesman Bill Powers.
