WILDCATS THROTTLE KEYDETS

Jason Zimmerman and J.D. Heuer sparked a key first-half run Saturday in leading Davidson to a 75-64 Southern Conference basketball victory over VMI.

Detlef Musch led the Wildcats (6-7 overall, 3-3 conference) with 16 points, Zimmerman added 15 and Heuer had 14.

The decisive 21-4 surge followed a transition layup by Jonathan Goodman, which brought VMI (5-8, 3-4) into a 13-13 tie with 11:37 remaining in the first half. From there, Heuer and Zimmerman each sank two 3-pointers as the Wildcats built a 34-17 lead.

Successive 3-pointers by Howard Byrd and Bobby Jones rallied the Keydets to 48-42 with 11:54 remaining. On VMI's next possession, Zimmerman turned a steal into a layup, sparking a 10-4 run. He got away for another transition layup at the 8:52 mark for a 58-46 lead.

VMI, outrebounded 49-26, drew no closer than nine points from there.

"I thought the key to the ballgame today was we got killed off the boards, for the second game in a row," VMI coach Joe Cantafio said.

Although 11 of the 14 Keydets who played scored, Jones, with 10 points, was the only VMI player in double figures.

"We never got a loose ball tonight," Cantafio said. "We didn't shoot the ball that well, except in the second half where we shot 48 percent.

"We just need to collect ourselves and go back to do the things we can do the best, and we got out of that today." \
