TENANTS ESCAPE HARM IN APARTMENT BLAZE
No one was hurt in a Saturday afternoon fire at Hunt Manor apartments that caused $10,000 damage. The fire, reported at 1:14 p.m., was contained to a second-floor bedroom and took 10 minutes to extinguish, said Roanoke district fire Chief Garry Basham. Most of the damage was caused by smoke, he said.
Basham said the fire was caused by four children playing with a cigarette lighter. The children's mother was in another part of the apartment when the fire started but was able to call 911 before leaving the building, he said.
"We have a lot of fires like this," he said. "People are lucky they get out."
Hunt Manor is an eight-unit complex managed by the Roanoke Redevelopment Housing Authority.
