FLOYD BOY, 16, DIES AS CAR STRIKES TREE

A 16-year-old Floyd County boy died Friday night from injuries sustained when the car in which he was riding left the road and crashed through a tree.

A State Police spokesman identified the victim, a passenger, as Kenny Joel Dalton of Route 2, Willis.

The accident occurred about 7 p.m. Friday on U.S. 221 about a mile south of Check.

A 1986 Buick driven by Charles Arthur Blackwell, 16, went off the right side of the road as it went into a left-hand curve, according to Trooper R.W. Abshire, who investigated the accident.

The car swerved back across the road, struck a guardrail on the left side and went through the air to the foot of an embankment, smashing through a locust tree and breaking it in half.

Dalton was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died at about 9 p.m.

Blackwell, the driver, was treated and released at Roanoke Memorial for minor injuries.

Abshire said he would not estimate yet how fast the car was going and that no charges had been placed in connection with the crash, "one of the worst we've had in a long time here." - New River Valley bureau
