17-YEAR-OLD SHOT TO DEATH DURING QUARREL WITH YOUTH
A 17-year-old Roanoke boy was killed early Saturday morning after being shot at least seven times with a semi-automatic gun.According to a Roanoke police report, Percy Johnson III was riding in a car with an unidentified female when the two stopped to help a group of young men who were walking along Bridge Street with what appeared to be a gas can.
A 17-year-old is being held at the Coyner Springs Detention Center in connection with the shooting, police said.
According to the report, Johnson got out of the stopped car in the 500 block of Bridge Street. The unidentified female told police Johnson and one of the young men started arguing. The young man then pulled out a large semi-automatic gun and shot Johnson, she said.
The driver, fearing for her safety, she said, drove to the 7-Eleven at 804 Bridge St., phoned the victim's mother and the police.
Officers arrived at the scene and found Johnson's body lying in the street.
A clerk at the 7-Eleven, who asked not to be identified, said he has lived in the neighborhood all his life and that this is the first shooting he can remember there. He admits that times have changed.
"There was a time when people could leave their cars and homes unlocked here, but not anymore," he said.
Police said they believe the argument and slaying stemmed from the Jan. 12 shooting of an 18-year-old man on Ferncliff Avenue that is still being investigated by police.
