WHAT SNOWBOARDERS REALLY ARE SAYING
You'll recognize them right off.Baggy pants. Oversized sweat shirts or long-sleeved T's. Baseball caps worn backward. And surfboards turned skis.
But get close enough to hear them, and you may not recognize a thing they say.
"Big, big air. Fully bio, man. He totally tweaked. And coming out of it, he slammed hard. All wet."
Translation: Great jump. He got lots of height, with an unbelievably contorted maneuver. And on the landing, he fell flat on his face and got covered with snow.
Snowboarders have their own language, which makes little sense to anyone outside the clique.
To help converse with the snowboard crowd, here are a few more translations:
Carve - turn.
Fakie - carve backward.
Hit - a jump.
Bone out - extend either the front or back leg during a jump.
Stale fish - jump while grabbing the middle of the board with the back hand and boning out the back leg.
Indy poke - similar to a stale fish, but boning out the front leg.
Stinky - jump with the knees spread outward in an awkward fashion.
Method air - a jump using the front hand to bring the nose of the board to the chin.
Japan air - drop the front knee toward the back foot in midair, while grabbing the middle of the board.
Magic Johnson - a 360-degree jump while feigning a slam dunk.
Crippler - back flip with a half rotation.
Jibbing - to get air off every possible hit on a run.
