PALADINS CONTROL KEYDETS

Derek Waugh scored a game high 18 points as Furman snapped a four-game losing skid with a 73-61 Southern Conference basketball win over VMI on Sunday.

The Paladins (4-11 overall, 3-5 in the league) beat the Keydets (5-9, 3-5) for the 16th straight time at home.

Furman maintained control almost the entire game, taking the lead for good at 6-5 on Waugh's jump shot and leading by 19 points in the second half.

The Paladins held a nine-point lead (33-24) at halftime, but VMI scored the first six points of the second half on a 3-point shot by Lawrence Gullette and a 3-point play by Jonathan Penn.

Waugh's layup ignited a 19-7 run giving Furman a 52-37 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

The Paladins' 19-point lead was 61-42 on a Bill Harder layup with 6:20 left. A pair of 3-point baskets by Bryan Woolsey and a layup by Jonathan Goodman closed the margin to 11 at 61-50, but VMI got no closer.

Harder added 15 points, and Tezari Green had 14 for Furman, which hit 59 percent of its field goal shots. VMI hit 36 percent.

"I wish somebody could explain to me what's happened to Jonathan Penn and Lewis Preston," said VMI coach Joe Cantafio. "They're not playing well - just kind of walking around out there. We need them to play well for us to be successful.

"You look at what they shoot, and they're a combined 6-for-23. Last year they averaged nearly 20 points a game."

Bobby Prince from Lord Botetourt High School scored 12 points, and Gullette had 11 to lead the Keydets.
