OBIT WHITTEMORE, NENA THAMES
WHITTEMORE, Nena Thames, of St. Augustine, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died
on Saturday, January 23, 1993 at her home at 697 Standish Dr., St. Augustine.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, at Memorial
Presbyterian Church, St. Augustine, with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery in
Jacksonville. Born April 17, 1939 in New Orleans, Dr. Whittemore had pursued a
lifetime career in higher education, first as an English professor at Hunter
College and John Jay College of the City University of New York and Rutgers
University, and later as a college administrator, having most recently served
as vice president for Institutional Advancement at St. Augustine's Flagler
College. Graduated from Carleton College in 1961, she later earned an M.A.
from Hunter College, a Ph.D. from the City University of New York and
certificates from Bryn Mawr, Dartmouth, and Harvard University's Institute for
Educational Management. Before joining Flagler College in 1990, Dr. Whittemore
had been vice president of Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.; executive
director of development at Hollins College, and both senior development
officer for major gifts and director of alumni relations at Carleton College.
In June of 1992, she was awarded Carleton's exceptional service award for her
contributions to alumni relations. A board member, lecturer, and faculty
member, she was nationally and regionally active in CASE, the Council for the
Advancement and Support of Education. A published poet and writer of
professional and scholarly articles, Dr. Whittemore was also a civic leader in
Roanoke. She served on the advisory council of Building Better Boards (United
Way), was secretary and a member of the board of directors of the Hollins
College Research Institute, regional vice chair of the Andover Parents' Fund,
and was on the boards of the Roanoke chapters of the National Society of Fund
Raising Executives and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. She was
selected for the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Roanoke program. The
daughter of the late Brig. Gen. William M. Thames Jr., U.S. Army, and Ida
Bernice Thames, she is survived by her son, Alexander D. Whittemore III, a
junior at Carleton College; her husband, Robert A. Fliegel; and stepson, Troy
R. Fliegel, both of St. Augustine; and two brothers, William M. Thames III,
and Robert E. Thames, both of Ormond Beach, Fla. The family requests that in
lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.
