Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, at Memorial Presbyterian Church, St. Augustine, with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville. Born April 17, 1939 in New Orleans, Dr. Whittemore had pursued a lifetime career in higher education, first as an English professor at Hunter College and John Jay College of the City University of New York and Rutgers University, and later as a college administrator, having most recently served as vice president for Institutional Advancement at St. Augustine's Flagler College. Graduated from Carleton College in 1961, she later earned an M.A. from Hunter College, a Ph.D. from the City University of New York and certificates from Bryn Mawr, Dartmouth, and Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management. Before joining Flagler College in 1990, Dr. Whittemore had been vice president of Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.; executive director of development at Hollins College, and both senior development officer for major gifts and director of alumni relations at Carleton College. In June of 1992, she was awarded Carleton's exceptional service award for her contributions to alumni relations. A board member, lecturer, and faculty member, she was nationally and regionally active in CASE, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. A published poet and writer of professional and scholarly articles, Dr. Whittemore was also a civic leader in Roanoke. She served on the advisory council of Building Better Boards (United Way), was secretary and a member of the board of directors of the Hollins College Research Institute, regional vice chair of the Andover Parents' Fund, and was on the boards of the Roanoke chapters of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. She was selected for the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Roanoke program. The daughter of the late Brig. Gen. William M. Thames Jr., U.S. Army, and Ida Bernice Thames, she is survived by her son, Alexander D. Whittemore III, a junior at Carleton College; her husband, Robert A. Fliegel; and stepson, Troy R. Fliegel, both of St. Augustine; and two brothers, William M. Thames III, and Robert E. Thames, both of Ormond Beach, Fla. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.
