E&H RECEIVES GRANT TO STUDY CHILD CARE
Emory & Henry College has received a $26,313 planning grant to study ways of setting up a developmental child-care center on campus and hired a project coordinator for the job.The grant is from the Virginia Council on Child Day Care and Early Childhood Programs, Emory & Henry President Thomas R. Morris said. The college sought applications for a project coordinator after it was confirmed.
Chosen for the job was Marsha G. Partington of Abingdon. A graduate of Emerson College in Boston, Mass., she has worked as an executive assistant and paralegal, as well as helped to found Resolve Through Sharing, a support group for bereaved parents.
She will collect data on other employer-based child-care programs in Virginia and northeastern Tennessee, including child-care centers on college and university campuses.
Partington will also organize a team of college and community volunteers who, along with her, will evaluate the need for a developmental child-care center in the area and try to find out how many college employees, students and local residents would use it.
A central issue will be whether the center can be operated on campus without significant financial subsidies. The demand for child care has grown in recent years, but many privately-operated centers have found it hard to generate enough fees to cover operating costs.
