E&H APPROVES BOND ISSUE

The Emory & Henry College Board of Trustees has approved a $5 million bond issue to fund campus improvements.

The overall emphasis will be on improvements to buildings, facilities and the campus infrastructure to improve the quality of life for resident students.

Local contractors are expected to be used for practically all of the projects.

One project students had urged would improve campus lighting along sidewalks and other outdoor areas where they frequently walk at night.

Based on recent contractors' estimates, $121,300 will be earmarked to add 26 new light posts and upgrade the illumination of 32 others.

The largest project calls for $500,000 to upgrade the campus water system. The 160-year-old college installed many water lines in the early 1900s, and leaks have increased in recent years.

Replacing the lines should save the college money in the long run.

Other projects include refurbishing the interior of Stuart Hall and getting new furnishings for Hillman Hall, both dormitories for men; developing a soccer practice field; improving heating and air-conditioning systems in the Student Union, library and chapel; renovating part of Byars Hall, an academic building; replacing tennis courts, and improving sidewalks and roads.

In other business Saturday, the trustees re-elected Abingdon lawyer Joe P. Johnson as chairman; Charlottesville business executive David W. Parrish as vice chairman, and United Methodist minister and church official G. Wayne Cummings of Johnson City, Tenn., as secretary.
