MAILMAN INDICTED IN THEFT OF CHECKS
A Martinsville postal carrier has been indicted on charges of stealing and selling goverment checks from the mail.David Ray Allen, a rural carrier working out of the Martinsville Post Office, is accused of having illegally obtained about $1,400 worth of unemployment and social security checks.
A four-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Roanoke accuses Allen of forging signatures on some of the checks and then selling the checks at below-face value to Ernest Dwayne Redd.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann Hill said Redd is unemployed, and authorities believe he wanted the money to pay living expenses. She said the checks Allen is accused of selling did not come from his postal route.
