MARYMOUNT CENTER COTO DIES

Pablo Coto, a senior center for Marymount died Monday night after collapsing in the first half of a game against Goucher, Md.

Coto, 21, was pronounced dead at Arlington Hospital, where nursing supervisor Brenda Reiner said the cause of death appeared to have been cardiac arrest.

Coto, a native of Oviedo, Spain, had no history of medical problems, coach Webb Hatch said.

With 10:36 left in the first half, Coto went for a rebound in a crowd of players. He came down hard, with first his knees and then his head hitting the floor. Coto raised up to nearly a sitting position with a disoriented look, started shaking and then collapsed on his back. Trainers rushed onto the floor.

The teams returned to their locker rooms and security guards cleared the gym. An ambulance began performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and Coto was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:08 p.m.

Coto, 6 feet 5, made the all-Capital Athletic Conference second team last season, and was averaging 14.9 points and 9.1 rebounds.
