SCHOOL BOARD APPLICATIONS BEING TAKEN

The City Clerk's office has started accepting applications for the School Board seats now held by Chairman Finn Pincus and Charles Day, Roanoke City Council was told Monday night. Pincus' and Day's terms end June 30, and they will be eligible for reappointment. The deadline for applications is March 10.

In other action, council:

Authorized the School Board to apply for a $2.2 million loan from the state Literary Fund to pay for the renovation of Morningside Elementary School.

Voted to seek a change in the city charter that would allow the School Board to open school prior to Labor Day.

Proclaimed Wednesday as Jimmy Carter Day in Roanoke. Carter, a Valley Metro driver for 18 years, has been rated one of the top bus drivers in the country in safety and driving skills in national contests.

Was given copies of a recycling curbside calendar that features pictures of paintings, sculpture or other art by Roanoke Valley artists that is made of garbage or has a garbage theme. The calendar is designed to remind city residents of the weeks when their recyclable materials will be collected. Copies of the calendar have been given to 16,000 households that are now provided the recycling collection service.
