Union accusations delay Trailer Co. voteATKINS - A scheduled vote Thursday for about 400 employees of Utility Trailer Corp. on representation by the United Steel Workers has been postponed. The delay was caused by eight unfair-labor-practice charges filed by the union.
The Winston-Salem, N.C., regional office of the National Labor Relations Board will investigate. The election may be rescheduled, depending on the board's action. The union accused the company of discriminating against workers who support the union, said Ron Yost of the NLRB.
The company made "a lot of threats and isolated union supporters in the plant," said Jim Cunningham, a union organizer. - Staff report
