OBIT BIRCHFIELD, CHRISTINE LUKE
BIRCHFIELD, Christine Luke, 79, of Salem, died Monday, January 25, 1993 at her home. She was the widow of J. Kermit Birchfield Sr. and daughter of the late Allan Lindsay Luke and Mary Ellen Rocke Luke and the granddaughter of the late John Guthrie Luke, Founder of the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company (Westvaco) and Ella Hope Green Luke. She graduated from the Ogontz School, Philadelphia, Pa. in 1932. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, served as president of the Roanoke Valley Garden Club from 1960 to 1962, was a member of the Junior League and served as a volunteer in the American Red Cross. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Kermit Birchfield Jr. and Glenys Birchfield; one granddaughter, Guthrie Birchfield, all of Boston. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Evergreen Burial Park, 11 a.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 257, Roanoke, VA 24002 or Housecall Hospice, 4910 Valley View Boulevard, Roanoke, VA 24012.
