TOP BACK MAKING HIS PICK

Sussex Central running back Antonio Prosise, the Group A football player of the year, is expected to announce today that he will sign with Virginia.

"I feel very comfortable that's where he'll end up," Sussex Central coach Dwight Reagan said. "He's definitely leaning toward Virginia."

Prosise, who rushed for more than 6,000 yards in his career, was rated one of the top 25 prospects in Virginia by the Roanoke Times & World-News. Other Top 25 selections to make choices include Kecoughtan wide receiver Macey Brooks (James Madison) and Ferguson wide receiver Linwood DeBrew (East Carolina).

Highland Springs defensive back Tony Booth, a Second 25 choice, committed to JMU.

Virginia Tech remained busy, getting a commitment from 6-foot-2, 285-pound John Matesic, a first-team all-state selection from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, N.J. Matesic, who picked Tech over Maine, is projected by the Hokies to be a center.

"The entire world would have been after him if he were two or three inches taller," Bergen Catholic coach Fred Stengel said. "I've been coaching 25 years and I've had only one lineman to compare to him - Mike Ferroni, who was a three-year starter at Iowa.

Matesic, who canceled trips to Massachusetts and Pittsburgh, has lifted more than 300 pounds in the bench press. He scored 1,100 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
