DYKE NOT RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR THIS YEAR
State Education Secretary James Dyke said Tuesday he will not run for governor - this year.In an interview with the Daily Press newspaper of Newport News, Dyke said he had ruled out challenging Attorney General Mary Sue Terry for the 1993 Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Dyke said he will spend the year stumping on Terry's behalf.
His announcement leaves Terry unopposed for the party's nomination.
Dyke also said he was not ruling out a campaign for lieutenant governor or governor in 1997.
Dyke said he decided to back away from challenging Terry after it became clear she would continue the policies of Gov. Douglas Wilder's administration and reach out to Democratic constituency groups.
"When I first started this I said my main purpose was to send a message to the attorney general," Dyke said. "I feel she has heard the message."
Terry said she did not have to alter any of her policy positions to ward off a challenge by Dyke.
She said it would have been "inappropriate and counterproductive" for her to talk about the issues Dyke was pushing - education and economic development - because they are the purview of the governor.
