RESTAURANT SUPPLIER ELIMINATES 30 JOBS
Roanoke Restaurant Service Inc. has cut 30 jobs, a direct result of having lost its contract with Hardee's restaurants. Most workers let go were truck drivers or warehouse employees, said Nina Edwards, personnel manager at the Salem business. They were 10 percent of the company's work force.
Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the Rocky Mount, N.C., company that owns the Roanoke-area Hardee's, said Wednesday it will purchase all of its food and supplies from Fast Food Merchandisers.
Fast Food is a division of Hardee's Food Systems, also of Rocky Mount.
Previously, Boddie-Noel had split purchases for its Shenandoah Valley division between the corporate supplier and Roanoke Restaurant Service. Roanoke Restaurant had 40 percent of the business, Richard P. Jenkins said Wednesday.
Jenkins is president of the restaurant division of Boddie-Noell, which operates 335 Hardee's franchises, 50 of them in the Shenandoah Valley.
Jenkins said the consolidation of its purchases was simply "a business decision" that will provide the company greater efficiency.
Roanoke Restaurant Service has been in the Roanoke area since 1954. It is a subsidiary of Unifax of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Unifax, which has been publicly traded since 1991, is one of the country's largest food distribution companies.
