CREW STOPS SHIP HEADED TOWARD COAST
The freighter Lyra remained anchored in rough seas off the North Carolina coast on Wednesday, and the Coast Guard said the threat of a major oil spill appeared to be over. But high seas, strong winds and a disabled generator prevented crew members from raising the anchors and reattaching a tow line so the vessel could continue its Baltimore-to-New Orleans trip.
Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Larry Hammond said he didn't expect any attempt to reattach the tow line before this afternoon, if that early.
Early Wednesday, a crew dropped by helicopter onto the unmanned, 637-foot container ship manually lowered its anchors, halting its perilous drift toward a submerged ocean ridge.
