WRECK DEATH BLAMED ON LACK OF SEAT BELT
A Vinton man who was killed in a single-car accident Tuesday night probably would have lived had he been wearing a seat belt, Roanoke police said Wednesday.Gary H. Gabrielson, 28, was the driver of a car that crashed head-on into a traffic signal pole at Valley View Boulevard and Valley View West around 10:30 p.m., said Sgt. P.B. Shumater.
Gabrielson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The windshield of the subcompact car was shattered on both the driver's and passenger's sides. Passenger Arthur R. Hull Jr., of Roanoke, who also was not wearing a seat belt, was in satisfactory condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, a nursing supervisor reported.
Jay P. McAllister of Roanoke, riding in the back seat, was the only one in the car wearing a seat belt, according to a Police Department news release. He was in serious condition at Roanoke Memorial Wednesday. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
