OBIT HANCOCK, MATTHEW LEE, ("MATT")
HANCOCK, Matthew Lee, ("Matt"), 22, of Blacksburg, died Monday, January 25,
1993. Matt was born in Roanoke on November 27, 1970. His death was due to a
ruptured cerebral aneurysm. Matt was a 5th year senior at Virginia Tech at the
Communications School. He was Features Editor of the Collegiate Times,
Virginia Tech's Student News Paper. Matt was a brother of the Sigma Phi
Epsilon Fraternity. Matt was Vice President of the Tech Chapter of the Society
of Professional Journalist. Matt was a poet, a writer and dreamed of
graduation and a job with a news paper and the Pulitzer. Matt's parents are
Bunny Hancock of Roanoke and Bill Hancock, Jr. of Roanoke. He is survived by
his older brother, Will Hancock, Roanoke and his stepbrothers, Luke and Bubba
Hancock, Roanoke; his grandparents, Clinton and Vera Alta Poage, Check, Va.,
Doris Grimes, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Bill Hancock, Sr., Glassboro, N.J.
Matt's other survivors are his cousins, Sam and Mike Hancock, Marty Dee and
Stacey Kirsch, Bo and Mark Rains and Jenny Beard; his aunts and uncles, Vandy
Beard, Frank Hancock, Media Rains, Jim Hancock and Sharon Kirsch. A
scholarship fund has been established to honor Matt's memory at Virginia Tech
in the School of Communications for 5th year seniors who are writers and
journalist. Checks may be sent to Virginia Tech Foundation, C/O of Memorial
for Matthew Lee Hancock, 201 Pack Building, Blacksburg, Va. 24061. Matt was an
organ donor. The family will receive visitors at DeVilbiss Funeral Home
Wednesday night after 6:30 p.m. The funeral and memorial service will be at
the Virginia Tech War Memorial Chapel on the Virginia Tech Campus at 11 a.m.
on Thursday. A graveside service will follow in Roanoke at Blue Ridge Memorial
Gardens.
