OBIT HACKMAN, M. RUTH AKIN

HACKMAN, M. Ruth Akin, of 1212 Bell Tavern Road, Lynchburg, formerly of Radford, died at Virginia Baptist Hospital January 26, 1993. Born in the Burwood community of Williamson County, Tenn., on December 13, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Millard F. Akin and Lula Boyd Akin. She was married to the late George Mullica Hackman of Knoxville, Tenn. She is survived by a daughter, Joanna Hackman Harris; a son-in-law, Norman S. Harris; and four grandchildren, Martha Terrell Harris, N. Stuart Harris, Joanna Ruth Harris, and Beth Harris. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joella A. Bradley and two brothers, J. B. Akin and Robert M. Akin. She received BS and MA degrees from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was Professor Emeritus at Radford University where she was professor of Foods and Nutrition and chairman of the department. In recent years she had written her memories of the idyllic childhood growing up in rural middle Tennessee. She had many interests including hiking in the mountains, birds, nature, reading and traveling. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg with interment in Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tenn. on Saturday. The family will be at the residence on Thursday evening. It is suggested that memorials be made to Meals on Wheels or First Presbyterian Church. Duiguid Rivermont Chapel in Lynchburg is in charge of arrangements.
