Duties put on steel from Canada, JapanWASHINGTON - The Commerce Department tentatively determined Wednesday that Canada, Japan and 17 other countries were exporting unfairly priced steel into the United States, and it set retaliatory steps in motion.
But foreign producers described the action as misguided. Peter Suchman, a Washington lawyer representing Hoogovens, a steel maker in the Netherlands, said shortages could result in the United States and prices would be driven up.
The temporary duties range from less than 1 percent to 109 percent. The fees are assessed to compensate for inequitable pricing compared to domestic products. - Associated Press
USAir changes dates for Boeing deliveries
SEATTLE - USAir on Wednesday announced delivery delays and swaps on Boeing 737 and 757 orders that will enable it to trim capital expenses by about $835 million between 1993 and 1996.
The Arlington, Va., company will exercise options it has for 15 757s, previously scheduled for delivery in 1996 and 1997, in 1995 and 1996. It also placed new options for 15 757s to be delivered in 1995 and later.
It is canceling orders for 20 of 60 small 737s and will reschedule delivery of the remaining 40. No 737s will be delivered between 1993 and 1996; 12 are to be delivered annually between 1997 and 99 and four in 2000.
The switch to the larger 757 will allow the airline to better match capacity with projected demand, said Seth Schofield, USAir chairman and chief executive officer. - Seattle Times
