ELKS CLUB HOOP SHOOT WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Brad McFarland is following in his older brother's footsteps in winning awards in the Elks Club Hoop Shoot contest. But Brad had to go overtime recently to win the title in the boys' 10-11 age group at Madison Middle School.

He was tied with Trey Scruggs after making 20 of 25 free throws. But McFarland hit five straight in the shoot-off, while Scruggs could manage only three of five.

Brad's older brother, Brian, was a two-time winner in the Elks' competition. Brad is in sixth grade at Hidden Valley Junior High and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy McFarland of 5121 Meadow Valley Circle S.W.

Other winners and their age groups are as follows:

Boys 8-9 - Philip Wall, 22 shots. Wall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wall of 2022 Mount Vernon Road S.W., is a third-grader at Roanoke Catholic School.

Boys 12-13 - Michael Yates, 23 shots. Yates, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Yates of 207 Trinkle Ave. N.E., is a seventh-grader at Breckinridge Middle School.

Girls 8-9 - Jamie Walthall, 14 shots. Walthall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Walthall, is a third-grader at Glen Cove Elementary School.

Girls 10-11 - Kimberly Croy, 15 shots. Croy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Croy of 1106 Debra Lane, Salem, is a fifth-grader at South Salem Elementary School.

Girls 12-13 - Crystal Fant, 15 shots. Fant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Fant of 1503 Millwood Drive, Salem, is a seventh-grader at Andrew Lewis Middle School.

The winners will compete Feb. 6 at Madison in the district shoot against winners from Lynchburg, Danville, Martinsville, Clifton Forge, Galax and Pulaski. The district winners will advance to the state contest Feb. 20 in Charlottesville.

\ 3 Roanoke players place in darts tourney

Vic Simpkins of Roanoke placed third in the pro singles division of the Pennsylvania Bullshooter Eastern Regional darts tournament, held recently in Pittsburgh.

His finish qualifies him for the World Championship tournament Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.

Waldo Cunningham, also of Roanoke, placed fourth in the same division. Mary Simpkins, Simpkins' wife, finished in the fifth to sixth spot in women's doubles.

The three were the first participants in Shenandoah Amusement Co. dart leagues to place in national regional competition.

The tournament, sponsored by Arachnid Inc. of Chicago, had more than 3,000 entrants.

\ Roanoke Gold team wins in Greensboro

The Roanoke Valley Basketball Association's valleywide club has won its first tournament.

The Roanoke Gold team of 11-year-olds won the Greensboro Cellular One Invitational. The team is coached by James Carpenter and Delmar Irving.

Timothy Lovelace was voted most valuable player for the tournament. Alfonso Harrington joined him on the all-tournament team.

Knights to sponsor foul-shooting tourney

The Knights of Columbus Council 562 of Roanoke will hold its annual foul-shooting contest Feb. 6 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Roanoke Catholic School gymnasium.

The competition is open to boys and girls ages 10-14. The winners in each age group will advance to division competition.

\ Nominations open for PH Hall of Fame

The Patrick Henry High School Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominations.

Forms may be picked up in the school's main office or from any member of the Patrick Henry Athletic Booster Association's board.

Deadline for nominations is May 3, and the formal induction will be at the homecoming game in the fall.
