NEW CASTLE TRYING FOR PEACE AND QUIET

Noise, rowdiness, loitering, reckless skateboarding and bike-riding may lead to several restrictive ordinances in the Town of New Castle.

The problems have been present for some time, said Mayor Thomas Zimmerman, but they have escalated in recent months.

The New Castle Town Council, therefore, will hold a public hearing on Feb. 15 to consider four proposed laws designed to bring more order. The hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Craig County Courthouse in New Castle.

One of the laws would impose a curfew from 11 p.m. until to 6 a.m. for all youths younger than 18.

A second ordinance would prohibit skateboard and bicycle-riding at all hours on sidewalks or the street on Main Street in the downtown area.

A third ordinance would prohibit excessive noise in the downtown area, and a fourth law would make loitering for any age illegal.

Zimmerman said residents who live in the downtown area have complained frequently of late-night noise.

Also, he said, there have been cases of people being knocked down on the sidewalks by young people riding bicycles and skateboards.

Zimmerman said one of the main aims of the proposed ordinances is to make parents aware of the problems and to encourage them to discipline their children.
