HERD HANDLES VMI
Tyrone Phillips scored 18 of his 29 points in the first half to energize an early scoring run that boosted Marshall to an 80-66 college basketball victory over VMI on Wednesday night. The Thundering Herd (11-5 overall, 6-3 in the Southern Conference) shot 62 percent in the first half and kept a margin of at least 12 points between it and VMI (5-10, 3-6) the entire second half.
The Keydets' last lead was 13-12 at 14:06 in the first half when Bobby Prince hit two free throws.
Marshall's go-ahead, 34-12 scoring drive began at 13:22 in the first half on Tink Brown's jumper, which gave the Herd a 14-13 lead. It was the seventh lead change.
From there, Marshall methodically moved the score up, building a 19-point lead as the first half drew to a close. Michael Peck's dunk with six seconds left made it 44-25.
However, Peck pushed VMI's Terrell Milam after the dunk. Prince hit the second shot of the ensuing technical foul and Jonas Callis scored a layup with one second left, making it 44-28 at halftime.
VMI closed to 44-32 with 18:44 left, on baskets by Jonathan Goodman and Louis Preston. That was the closest the Keydets came.
Preston led VMI with 23 points, followed by Bobby Jones with 12 and Jonathan Penn with 10.
VMI shot 36 percent in the first half, making 10 of 28 field-goal attempts.
Marshall and VMI play at home this weekend against the same opponents. Marshall plays East Tennessee State in Huntington on Saturday and Appalachian State on Sunday, and VMI vice-versa in Lexington, Va. \
