PULASKI BOARD WEIGHS NEW SCHOOL ATTENDANCE ZONES
The Pulaski County School Board went over a draft plan for new attendance zones for three elementary schools behind closed doors Thursday night. The reason cited for the closed session under Virginia's Freedom of Information Act was protection of the privacy of individuals in personnel matters not related to public business.
The only individuals would have had to be pupils now attending Jefferson, Critzer, Northwood or Claremont elementary schools. Redrawn attendance zones would not directly affect teachers, who can live anywhere.
Jefferson Elementary School, the oldest in the county, will close at the end of this school year. Its pupils will be redistributed among the other three schools in the town of Pulaski.
An open meeting to announce the new attendance zones, once the School Board agrees on where they should be, will be held sometime next month in the auditorium of Pulaski Middle School.
After that, there will be follow-up meetings at each of the elementary schools over four days to pinpoint the changes affecting each school and allow administrators to talk individually to parents with specific questions.
