WOMAN WAIVES HEARING ON CHARGES OF CHECK ALTERING

A West Virginia woman waived preliminary hearing this week on charges that she altered a $10,000 check facsimile from a mailed sweepstakes entry and cashed it at a credit union.

Nannette Althea Hearn, 28, of Bluefield, W.Va., was charged with grand larceny by Giles County authorities in December after they investigated a complaint made by the Celco Federal Credit Union in Pearisburg.

James Hartley, commonwealth's attorney, said the charge will be considered by a Giles County grand jury when it meets April 13.

Hearn is free on $10,000 bond.

Hearn is accused of presenting the altered check at the Celco Federal Credit Union in mid-December.

She is not an employee of Hoechst-Celanese.

The check stub indicated the check was not legitimate and was for promotional purposes, Willie Lucas, an investigator with the county Sheriff's Office, said last month.

But those words had been cut away, along with the stub, and the check was presented for payment, Lucas said.

The check was endorsed with Hearn's name. Hearn is accused of depositing $5,000 into her account and taking the remaining $5,000.

Bank employees took a closer look at the check later in the day while reviewing transactions and brought it to the attention of the manager, Lucas said.
