DEAF AWARENESS WEEK AT NRCC
Feb. 8-12 has been designated Deaf Awareness Week at New River Community College in Dublin with a full slate of activities.
\ Monday: A telecommunications display and demonstration will be held in the T.J. Anderson Student Lounge, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. From 11 a.m. to noon, entertainment will be provided by NRCC's Sign Language Club and a performance group from Virginia Heights Elementary School in Roanoke.
\ Tuesday: The captioned movie "Children of a Lesser God" will be shown without sound at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in T.J. Anderson Student Lounge.
\ Wednesday: Students, faculty and staff may participate in a communications awareness activity using fingerspelling, lip reading, American Sign Language, signed English and pantomime.
\ Thursday: The touring company "Sunshine Too" will give two performances, in sign and voice, of its show of songs, skits, poetry and storytelling. The morning show is at 11 a.m. in the T.J. Anderson Student Lounge with free admission. The evening show is at 7:30 p.m. in the Richardson Auditorium with an admission charge of $2 for adults.
\ Friday: Clayton Valli, instructor of linguistics and interpreting at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., will present poetry through American Sign Language at noon in the T.J. Anderson Student Lounge.
The final event of Deaf Awareness Week will be a Valentine's Dance Friday evening for NRCC students and guests.
