AIRPORT OPERATIONS CHIEF LEAVES

Bob Brammer, who began his airport career by picking up cigarette butts and candy wrappers, has been named director of operations for the Richmond International Airport.

Brammer, an operations supervisor at the Roanoke Regional Airport, will assume the duties of his new job next month.

As operations director, he will oversee safety, security, public relations and federal certification for the Richmond airport.

Brammer, 40, has worked for the Roanoke airport for two decades. He started as a temporary custodial worker when he was 19.

He worked his way up through the ranks as a laborer and maintenance man before becoming an operations supervisor.

Brammer, a Roanoke native, said he decided to accept the Richmond post because there was no more opportunity for promotion in Roanoke.

A new director of maintenance for the Roanoke Airport, John Katon, was hired two years ago. Katon came to Roanoke from Florida, where he was assistant director for operations for the Central Florida Regional Airport, a general aviation facility near Orlando.

Brammer said he took the Richmond post because it was a professional opportunity that was too good to decline.

"I had decided that when I reached 40 and was still an operations supervisor, I would make a move," Brammer said.

"We're thrilled to get him," said Sandy Arnett, director of human resources for the Richmond airport.

In Richmond, Brammer will be working for the Capital Region Airport Commission. Four localities are members of the commission: Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico.
