OBIT WHITENER, THELMA WEST
WHITENER, Thelma West, 83, of 902 Calhoun Ave., Greenwood, S.C., died
Wednesday, January 27 at her home. She was born in Salem, December 17, 1909,
the daughter of the late Raleigh West and the late Cammie Price West. She was
a graduate of Chatham Hall School and attended Blackstone College. She was a
member of Main St. United Methodist Church, a member and former president of
the Lawton Sunday School Class, a member of the UMW of the church and also was
a member and past president of the Lotus Garden Club and the Keowee Study
Club. She served as a volunteer at the Greenwood Methodist Home and formerly
assisted as counselor at the Greenwood YMC. She was the last member of her
immediate family. She is survived by her husband, Newell R. Whitener, of the
home; a number of nieces; nephews; and great-nephews. Funeral services will be
held Saturday, 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville, with the Rev. Carlos
Gardner officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville.
Memorials may be made to the West Scholarship Fund, c/o Calvary Christian
Church, 515 Mulberry Road, Martinsville, Va. 24112.
