Goody's sports new seal after poisoningWINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Goody's Headache Powders returned to the market Thursday with packaging that features a new safety seal overwrap.
The individual doses, however, will remain in their traditional paper enclosures, said the maker, Goody's Manufacturing Corp.
The powder was taken off the market a month ago when allegations of product tampering arose in a Tennessee man's death from cyanide poisoning.
The family-owned business, founded in 1932, recalled its headache powder Dec. 23 and laid off about 30 of the 55 employees at its Winston-Salem plant Jan. 5 because of the production shutdown. A Goody's spokeswoman said employees returned to work last weekend. - Associated Press
Publishers Clearing House investigated
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. - The New York state attorney general's office disclosed this week that Publishers Clearing House is "currently under investigation for deceptive practices."
"We've requested a lot of records," said press secretary Ed Barbini.
Publishers Clearing House spokesman David Sayer responded: "We run a fair and honest contest, are cooperating as we have with other inquirers before and are confident of the outcome."
Attorney General Robert Abrams and his staff receive complaints every year about Publishers Clearing House; Barbini says there have been several hundred over the past two years.
The investigation also is understood to be related to continuing questions about Publishers Clearing House's use of outside mail-processing firms, which arose after a series of news reports and a subsequent lawsuit last fall. - Washington Post
