Sprint-Centel merger may cost Bristol jobsBRISTOL - United Telephone-Southeast will be consolidated with two other telephone companies in a merger of Sprint and Centel Corps., a move that could affect jobs at United's headquarters in Bristol.
United Telephone president Bill Smith said all Sprint and Centel operations in Virginia, Tennessee and North and South Carolina will be consolidated in a mid-Atlantic unit at Wake Forest, N.C.
United, an operating unit of Sprint, serves the Southwest Virginia counties of Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth and Washington, and cities of Bristol and Galax. It has about 1,500 employees, including more than 600 in the Bristol area.
Smith said Tuesday the company will continue to have "a major presence" in Bristol, but he did not say how many employees will continue. The Bristol area has lost at least 4,500 jobs to plant closings and layoffs in the past decade. - New River Valley bureau
