NAMES ON CAMPUS

LEONOR ULLOA, a foreign language professor; ROBERT WHISONANT, the geology department chairman; and RICHARD MURPHY, an English professor, have been nominated for the 1993 Outstanding Faculty Awards Program sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia.

\ CHESTER WATTS, ERNST H. KASTNING and Whisonant, geology professors, recently received a $25,000 grant from Ebasco Inc. to study the relationship among giant landslides, broken formations in caves and earthquakes.

Murphy and KIP KIPLING, an associate professor of philosophy, have had their book "Symbiosis: Writing and an Academic Culture" published. The book explores the university's academic culture and the development of its Writing Across Curriculum program. CLARENCE C. ROSE, professor of finance and

director of the master's of business administration program, will head the finance department in the College of Business and Economics.

\ VICKI D. LINKOUS, an assistant professor in education studies, will join the Commission on Middle Grades English Language Arts Teacher Education for the Conference on English Education.

\ BECKY COVEY has been named equal opportunity coordinator in the university's personnel office.

\ STEVEN M. CULVER, director of the office of student assessment, has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Roanoke Area Tech Prep Consortium. He has been elected publications editor for Virginia Assessment Group. Culver and biology professor JOEL HAGEN made presentations at the Sixth Annual Conference on Student Assessment in Virginia Beach.

\ STEVEN PONTIUS, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a $10,000 grant to fund the Virginia Geographic Alliance.

\ MICHAEL CRONIN, director of the Oral Communication Program, and program coordinator GEORGE GRICE had an article accepted for publication in Continuing Education. The article, which leads the journal's January issue, compares ways of implementing oral communication across curriculum programs.

\ KAREN CRONIN, a graduate student from Shawsville; TOM BRUNEAU; GWEN BROWN; Michael Cronin; and Grice made presentations at the 1992 Speech Communication Association National Convention in Chicago.

\ ANNA FARIELLO, director of art galleries, was co-chairwoman of a session at the Southeast College Art Conference in Birmingham, Ala.

\ ROBERT SMALL, dean of the College of Education and Human Development, has been named chairman of the National Council of Teachers of English's Committee on Teacher Education and Certification.

\ ALAN FORREST, a counselor education professor, made two presentations at the Virginia Counselors Association annual meeting in Richmond.

\ JAN AYCOCK, director of international student services, has been appointed community section representative for Region 8 of the National Association of Foreign Student Affairs: Association of International Educators. The region includes Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.

\ BRUCE MAHIN, a music professor, will have his computer music compositions "Rituals" and "Of Mice and Men" promoted in the upcoming Pioneer Percussion Ltd. catalog.

\ JANET BOETTCHER, chairwoman of the School of Nursing, passed the examination prepared by the Certification Board of Community Health Nursing Practice and earned certification as a community health nurse.

\ DOUGLAS WOOLLEY, ADRIENNE BIRECREE and LINDA DOBKINS recently participated in the Youth Economic Development Seminar in Abingdon County.
