GOLF WON'T APPEAR IN ATLANTA GAMES
Atlanta Olympic organizers dropped their bid to add golf to the 1996 Summer Games and hold the event at the site of the Masters Tournament, citing months of dispute. The decision by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games came one day after the president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, said he felt golf had little chance of being included in the Centennial Games. With the apparently slim chances for golf to be approved, it made little sense to spend any more time pushing for it, ACOG said in a statement.
ACOG sought last October to add golf, which has not been part of the Olympics since 1904, to the Games. Billy Payne, ACOG's president, said the Augusta National Golf Club would be a showcase for the South and a potentially rich source of revenue. But the bid drew almost immediate opposition from those opposed to the membership rules at Augusta National, which has only one black member and no women.
