AUTOPSY SHOWS HEART ATTACK CAUSE OF PLAYER'S DEATH
Marymount University basketball player Pablo Coto, who collapsed during a game, died from a heart attack, an autopsy shows.Dr. James Beyer, the chief medical examiner for northern Virginia who performed the autopsy, would not elaborate on his findings.
Coaches and teammates have said Coto, 21, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound senior, appeared to be in perfect health before he died Monday night.
Coto had an enlarged heart, the Northern Virginia Sun reported Friday. The Merrifield newspaper quoted an unnamed doctor in the emergency room at Arlington Hospital, where Coto was pronounced dead.
An enlarged heart develops over a number of years and has been blamed in the deaths of other young athletes, the doctor said.
A dizzy spell that Coto suffered during a Jan. 13 game could have been a warning, the doctor said. Coto took himself out of the game for a few minutes but then returned.
Coto, an international business major, was a native of Oviedo, Spain, who came to the United States six years ago. He attended Bishop O'Connell High School while he lived with relatives in Arlington.
