TERRIERS TAKE BITE OUT OF LORD BOTETOURT
After spending the previous four days in exams, the William Byrd Terriers decided it was time to let out the frustration and have some fun.The Terriers, behind David Robertson's 27 points and a tenacious defense that held Lord Botetourt to 30 percent shooting, trounced the visiting Cavaliers 73-43 in a Blue Ridge District basketball game Friday night.
"I was anxious to see how the team would respond after the layoff," said William Byrd coach Paul Barnard.
He didn't have to worry. Byrd jumped on the Cavaliers from the start.
Lord Botetourt made only two of its first 11 shots. Despite the poor shooting, the Cavaliers trailed only 14-8 after the first quarter.
The second quarter turned into the David Robertson show. Robertson scored the first 12 points of the quarter as Byrd went on a 14-0 run and bolted to a 28-8 lead.
"We went to a single-post offense while they were in their man-to-man defense," Robertson said. "The guards penetrated and I went to the basket to get the shot."
After Cavaliers guard Shannon Williams stopped the Terriers' run with a 3-pointer, the Cavaliers then went on a spurt of their own. Lord Botetourt scored the next 13 points and to cut the lead to 30-23 at halftime.
"They did a good job of controlling the tempo in the first half. We let them hit a few threes and they were right back in the game," said Barnard.
The second half turned out to be a nightmare for Lord Botetourt. The Terriers outscored the Cavaliers 43-20 in the half, primarily behind Robertson's 11 points and four of Chris Lester's game-high seven assists.
Lord Botetourt, meanwhile, hit six of 22 shots and committed 12 of its 20 turnovers in the second half.
"Give their defense a lot of credit. They shut down the wing pass, and we just could not get the ball inside," said Lord Botetourt coach Don Meredith. "We have trouble scoring if we cannot get the ball inside."
The Cavaliers' three big men - Brad Morton, Jeff Cronise and Gabe Sander - were a combined 1-for-6 shooting with just five points between them.
Lord Botetourt was led by Williams, who had 22 points and hit five of eight shots from 3-point range. \
