RALLY PUTS GLENVAR IN CONTROL OF DISTRICT

Brad Melton had 18 points and Glenvar went ahead to stay in the final three minutes in taking a 65-62 Pioneer District boys' basketball victory over Covington on Friday night.

Brad Melton scored 18 points to lead the Highlanders (10-4 overall, 6-0 district).

Glenvar takes control of the Pioneer District race because it has beaten Covington twice, giving the Highlanders a two-game lead in the loss column at the mid-point of the district schedule.

Covington (6-6, 4-2) led most of the way until Glenvar tied it at 58 on a pair of free throws by Melton with 2:52 left to play. The Highlanders took the lead with 1:58 left on a 3-point shot by Wes Jones, who finished with 13 points.

Keeno Jones led Covington with 21 points, Chuck Morris had 14 and Van Wallace 12.

Jason Anderson added 11 points for Glenvar, which hit better than 50 percent of its field-goal attempts. \

James River 65

Craig County 62

NEW CASTLE - Troy Thompson scored 19 points and Raymond Waldron added 18 as the Knights slipped past the Rockets for a Pioneer District victory.

The teams were almost even through the first half, with James River (4-10, 3-3) leading by two points at intermission. Robbie Huffman sank three of his seven 3-pointers in the third quarter to keep Craig County (7-7, 2-4) close. The Rockets rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring James River 24-16 to pull to three points down, but they were unable to sink a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

Robbie Huffman led the Rockets with 30 points. \

Salem 91

Rockbridge County 50

Mark Byington scored 24 points and Salem blitzed the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game.

Josh Pugh added 17 points and Andy Myers had 12 for the Spartans (9-2, 2-2), who ran up 27 points in each of the second and fourth quarters.

No player reached double figures for Rockbridge County (8-7, 1-3). Kevin Alestock led the team with eight points. \

North Cross 84

Roanoke Catholic 50

The host Raiders remained unbeaten in Virginia Independent Conference play with the easy victory over the Celtics.

North Cross (14-4, 7-0) is tied for the VIC lead with Hargrave Military Academy.

North Cross took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Celtics 28-10.

Mike Bryan with 21 points and Monty Smith with 14 led North Cross.

Mike Kolnok had 14 for Catholic (4-17, 2-6). \

Girls

Franklin County 44

Patrick Henry 29

The Eagles opened with a 9-0 run and never looked back in beating the Patriots in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Franklin County (9-6, 3-5) led 13-2 after the first quarter.

Shannon Conley led a balanced Franklin County offense with 13 points.

Elisha Jones had 18 for the Patriots (1-14, 0-8). \

Pulaski County 35

William Fleming 34

Carrie McConnell scored 13 points and Laura Bishop added 10 as the Cougars slipped past the host Colonels for a Roanoke Valley District win.

Pulaski County (9-5, 5-1) used a zone to slow down the game in the third quarter and scored eight points while holding William Fleming to seven points. The Colonels rallied in the fourth quarter but came up short.

Marqueetta Randolph led William Fleming (8-5, 3-4) with 13 points. \

Roanoke Catholic 54

North Cross 16

Jackie Hinman scored 16 points as the Celtics (13-3, 8-2) romped over the Raiders (3-10, 1-8) for a Blue Ridge conference victory.

Elaine Ronquillo paced Roanoke Catholic with 14 points as the Celtics held all North Cross scorers to single digits. \
