CALENDAR-FEBRUARY

Be a trail hand

7 February can be a slow month for outdoor activities, so that makes it an ideal time to shoulder some of the burden of keeping the Appalachian Trail on a smooth course between Georgia and Maine.

This month, the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club has two work hikes scheduled, as members labor to move a portion of the famous pathway off the road and into the woods in the Fulhardt Knob area of Botetourt County. The work dates are next Sunday and Feb. 28. The Fulhardt project is a priority item for the club, one that members hope to accomplish by fall, said Charles Parry, the trail supervisor.

Helpers - you don't have to be a club member to participate - should contact Parry in Blacksburg, 703-951-1402, or Jim Hutchings in Roanoke, 343-5760. Bring a lunch, gloves and drinking water. Tools are provided. The meeting time is 8:30 a.m.

\ NRA aims at deer

8 It is called the NRA Great American Hunters Tour, and it will bring a trio of experts to the Salem Civic Center Feb. 8 where deer hunting techniques will be targeted. Last year's event attracted about 1,000 sportsmen.

One of more than 60 shows in 37 states, the Salem program will feature Bill Bynum, Mike Ondik and Wayne van Zwoll. The fee is $10 for NRA members, $12 for others. Preregistration may be accomplished with a credit card by calling 1-800-492-HUNT. The phone banks already have received more than 38,500 calls from across the country.

\ Boat show

26 Boat dealers are polishing their finest craft for the Southwest Virginia Boat Show at the Roanoke Civic Center February 26-28. And doing so with enthusiasm. After several years of less than smooth sailing for the boating industry, this appears to be a turn-around year.

The show provides consumers an opportunity to see what's new afloat, and to do some competitive negotiating with several dealers all under one roof. Well, not exactly all under one roof. About half the boats will be displayed outside the civic center.

\ Elk banquet

27 The toughest ticket in town will be the one that gets you into the banquet being sponsored by the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Rock Mountain Elk Foundation. The approximately 300 seats available are being gobbled up rapidly and will be gone well before the Feb. 27 banquet date at the Tanglewood Holiday Inn.

This is the chapter's second banquet-auction, and it is designed to raise money to conserve the habitat of elk and other wildlife. Last year's event netted $18,000. Two special guests will be featured: Mike Logan, a wildlife photographer and cowboy poet from Helena, Mont., and Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association. Tickets, which include membership, are $45 for a single, $65 for a couple. Information is available at 772-1414.
