HURRICANE'S DEATH TOLL CONTINUES TO MOUNT
Hurricane Andrew continued to claim lives months after the storm slammed through south Florida - deaths that haven't been recorded in official estimates, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Miami Herald found that at least 85 people in Dade County had died by the end of 1992 of causes related to the Aug. 24 storm, based on a review of coroner and police records and on interviews.
The deaths ranged from suicides to traffic fatalities in accidents at intersections where stop signs had been knocked down by the 175 mph winds, the newspaper reported.
The Dade County Medical Examiner's office set the death toll at 35, while the National Hurricane Center put the death toll at 44. The Hurricane Center also blamed four deaths in the Bahamas and six in Louisiana on Andrew.
