BOTETOURT COACH QUITS POST

Larry Carter, who has coached Lord Botetourt's football team for four years, is leaving that job to become the school's athletic director.

Carter has been in football coaching for 23 years and ends a career that carried him to four different schools as a head coach.

"There's no question it's been a big part of my life," Carter said. "I've accomplished a lot of things. I would like to have accomplished a lot more here at Lord Botetourt. At this point, I can help these programs in an administrative role."

Carter started his head coaching career at the old Rockbridge High School. He also coached at Hopewell and Patrick Henry high schools before moving to Lord Botetourt. Carter's overall record is 114-105-4.

Carter takes over for Gary Snyder as the school's athletic director. Snyder is moving to the West Coast since his wife took a job earlier this year at California-Berkley.

Carter, 45, said he's leaving football coaching immediately because Botetourt County has a rule that won't permit a head football or basketball coach to also be the athletic director.

"The job came open in the middle of the year and it gave me an opportunity to advance my career and to get into administration," said Carter, who has a master's degree in that field.

"I looked into it last fall, but of course Gary didn't find a position in California and hadn't sold his house," Carter said. "It's a good career move for me. It gives me an opportunity to see different aspects of athletics and school administration."

Carter will remain as the assistant track coach.

Carter's top football team came in 1985 when Patrick Henry won the Northwestern Region title and went to the Group AAA semifinals against T.C. Williams. The Patriots lost 10-0, but a couple of injuries to key offensive players the week of the game hurt PH's chances. For the year, PH went 12-1 and gave up only 58 points on defense.

At Botetourt, Carter's teams struggled with a 10-30 record. His Hopewell teams won the Central District twice. His Rockbridge team also won a district championship.
