RECRUIT PICKS VIRGINIA TECH

Virginia Tech received its 17th football commitment and Virginia lost one of its largest recruits as letter-of-intent day on Wednesday approaches.

Bound for Blacksburg is Tom Harsanyi, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound wide receiver and defensive back from Churchill High School in Potomac, Md., who also visited Northwestern and Duke.

"To be honest, I think it was Tech all the way," said Fred Shepherd, who also coached ex-Hokies John Rehme and Mitch Dove in his 25 years at Churchill.

Harsanyi had 67 tackles and five interceptions as a senior, giving him 13 interceptions the past two seasons. He also caught 18 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown this past season.

Virginia is down to 13 commitments now that 6-6, 300-pound Darryl Gilliam, a defensive tackle from Washington, D.C., has decided not to sign with the Cavaliers.

Gilliam had no comment when asked if he had been rejected by the UVa admissions office.

"It's an odd situation," he said. "Let's just leave it at that."

In other recruiting:

E.C. Glass coach Bo Henson, who speculated last month that linebacker Cornell Brown would stay in state, may prove to be a prophet. Brown, who plans to announce his decision Wednesday at a news conference, said he now favored Virginia Tech and Virginia over Maryland.

Craig Tweed, a first-team All-Group AAA center from Salem High in Virginia Beach, has committed to VMI. Tweed (6-2, 255) was named to the Roanoke Times & World-News Second 25.

Maryland received commitments from defensive back Lamont Gore and linebacker Ratcliff Thomas from Hargrave Military Academy. Thomas was an All-Group AAA choice in 1991 from T.C. Williams in Alexandria.
