OLLENDICK PICKS UVA
Katie Ollendick, a versatile athlete who has two individual state Group AA track championships and helped lead Blacksburg High to the 1992 state basketball title, has accepted a track and field scholarship from the University of Virginia.Ollendick said she's being considered for the high jump, 400, and 800 meters or as a heptathlete. The heptathlon combines the high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin, 200 meters, 800, and 100 hurdles.
Ollendick, the defending state champion in the high jump and the 400, said that her college choices came down to North Carolina, Wake Forest and Virginia.
"I went to Virginia for a visit and a basketball game and I really liked it," she said. "I also visited Wake. I'd been to Carolina before, but I chose not take one of my official visits there.
"The more I thought about it, the more I knew that Virginia was the place for me."
