DAY'S 23 POINTS LIFT RADFORD

Senior guard Doug Day scored 23 points, including three 3-pointers Monday, to lead Radford to a 71-60 victory over Charleston Southern in a Big South Conference game in Charleston, S.C.

Day, who missed all three of his 3-point attempts in the second half, has 362 career 3-pointers. He is one short of the NCAA record for 3-pointers made in a career, which is held by Jeff Fryer of Loyola Marymount.

It was the fifth straight loss for Charleston Southern (5-12, 2-7 Big South).

Radford is 10-11, 4-4.

In other state games:

\ Liberty 80, N.C.-Asheville 73: In Asheville, N.C., Parish Hickman scored 22 points and Julius Nwosu added 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Flames held off North Carolina-Asheville to extend their winning streak to five games.

Liberty (13-7, 7-2 Big South Conference) held a 70-69 lead with 3:30 to play when Nwosu scored on a dunk and was fouled. He converted the three-point play to stretch the lead to four. After David Jackson's basket, the Bulldogs (3-13, 1-8 Big South) didn't score again until the final buzzer and lost their fifth straight.

Matt Hildebrand had 16 points and Keith Ferguson scored 10 for Liberty. Burt Jenkins led UNCA with 18 points.

\ Hampden-Sydney 90, Lynchburg 61: In Hampden-Sydney, Everett Joyner scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures as the Tigers defeated the Hornets in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Hampden-Sydney (8-9, 4-7 ODAC) also got 14 points from Dee Vick. Anthony Cummings had 24 points for Lynchburg (5-12, 3-8). \

Women

\ UNC Charlotte 81, Virginia Tech 44: In Charlotte, N.C., the Lady 49ers handed the Lady Hokies their first Metro Conference loss.

UNCC (12-6, 4-2) led 30-11 after the first 14 minutes and the closest Tech (14-4, 5-1) got after that was 13 points down.

Julia Burton and Tammy Gilliam each had 18 points for the 49ers. No player reached double figures for Tech, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped.

\ Radford 67, Charleston Southern 57: At Radford, Shannan Wilkey and Sara Larsen scored career highs as the Highlanders tripped the Buccaneers in a Big South game.

Wilkey was 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line en route to her 26 points. Larsen scored 13 points on 6-of-9 field-goal shooting. Both also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Tammie Crown added 12 points and five rebounds for Radford (6-2, 8-8).

Charleston Southern (3-6, 5-10) was led by Chrissy Kelly with 17 points.
